Who are the commentators in IPL 2020
With its ever-growing popularity in the Indian subcontinent, cricket is one of the privileged sporting venues, second only to soccer, and as such offers very attractive opportunities for cricket betting online. Modern cricket is unrecognizable from its humble beginnings in the south of England in the late 16th century. By now the traditional cricket matches played in huge English gardens par excellence seems a far cry from the bold nature of Twenty20 that is the League with its IPL commentators infusing positive energy, flashing lights, colorful outfits, cheerleaders and players costing millions of dollars to franchises per a season.
Founded in 2008, the Indian Premier League has in just a few years grown into the world’s premier tournament played on the ‘short’ cricket formula, the Twenty20, in which matches last about three hours. According to Duff & Phelps, the value of the IPL brand has grown by 19 per cent to EUR 5.5 billion in the last 12 months. And it is destined to grow further, hand in hand with the television rights (the Indian channel Star Sports has paid 2.2 billion to broadcast the championship exclusively for the next five years).
And yet, despite the IPL and its multi-million-dollar salaries, which every year convince the world’s best players to queue up to earn a place in one of the eight franchises, it is difficult for cricket to close the economic gap that separates it from other major team sports in the short term. To get an idea, one only has to compare the earnings of Virat Kohli, the world’s highest-paid cricketer, with those of other top sportsmen: in 2018 Kohli earned €21 million between salary and sponsorships, compared to footballer Leo Messi’s €97 million, basketball player LeBron James’ €75 million and football champion Matt Ryan’s €59 million. Cricket has made great strides in recent years but has not yet been able to break through outside the Commonwealth countries.
English commentators for IPL 2020
In 2020 the IPL championship was postponed from April to September due to the global pandemic situation. Furthermore, since the rate of the virus spread in India itself was grave, BCCI decided to relocate the matches to the UAE and hold them without the audience present in the stadiums. But this sad situation led to IPL’s 25% viewership growth comparing to the previous season. Thus, it’s not wqnder that the IPL commentators were crucial more than ever. The full list of the IPL commentators 2020 was released by Star Sports, which is the official broadcaster of the League, just in the beginning of September.
Let’s take a closer look at the IPL English commentators of the last season: Pommie Mbangwa, Kevin Pietersen, Simon Doull, Anjum Chopra, Kumar Sangakkara, Harsha Bhogle, Rohan Gavaskar, Ian Bishop, Deep Dasgupta, Lisa Sthalaker, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, Murali Kartik, Mark Nicholas, Danny Morrison,Sunil Gavaskar, JP Duminy, Darren Ganga, Micheal Slater.
The job of the expert commentators is not just to give insights on the game proceedings, but also provide some tips and forecasts for the possible tournament development. The Star Sports Select Dugout was represented by the following panel:
- Brian Lara a batting expert;
- Brett Lee a bowling expert;
- Dean Jones a T20 Coach;

- Graeme Swann a spin wizard;
- and more experts from the T20 field!
The Select Dugout played an essential role as the matches were held in the empty stadiums. This year, Select Dugout, continuing its efforts to provide fans with more experiences, has taken a step forward with the new technological opportunities of the panel benefitting to the fans engagement. In addition to compelling content, the fans witnessed the technology and innovation that made the Dream11 app IPL 2020 journey with Star Sports Select an unforgettable one.
Hindi commentators for IPL 2020
Star India has recruited more than 90 commentators across various languages to attend the IPL audience. The Hindi IPL commentators 2020 included many stars, former cricketers themselves. Here is a full list of the Hindi commentators engaged in 2020 by BCCI: Ajit Agarkar, Irfan Pathan, Kiran More, Ashish Nehra, Jatin Sapru, Nikhil Chopra, Aakash Chopra, and Sanjay Bangar. Sanjay Manjrekar, former batsman who played for India in international cricket from the mid-80s to mid-90s having scored around four thousand runs, is axed from being a member of the IPL commentary panel, which he was a part of since the day of the League’s inauguration. This dismissal was due to his imprudent criticism of the allrounder Ravindra Jajejda during last year’s World Cup.

Among the announced panel of the IPL commentators in Telugu were: Venkatapathi Raju, Neha Matcha, Kalyan Krishna Doddapaneni, Venugopalarao Yalaka, Ashish Reddy Ammana, M Anand Sri Krishna, MSK Prasad, and Kaushik Nallan Chakravarthy. The same purpose of supporting local fans, the League hires Tamil language commentators.
